History Of Jim Corbett National Park

Corbett National Park is the oldest National Park in Asia, which was established in 1936, before this, the area was given to the English government to protect wildlife by the king of Tehari, In 1860 British government kept this in its hand and started protecting it. In the starting 19th century, the British govt started efforts to save the forest, and this task was given to Sir Ramsay ( British Major who was the commissioner at the time ) In this the first step was taken in 1868 when the British forest department was established and took over the land and this whole area and after some time in 1879, these areas concluded into a reserved area. In 1900 many British officers suggested making a national park on this land ( E.R Stecans and E.A Smythies) this was made a reserved area for the National Park in 1907 from 1907 to 1930 out was under process. After a long time, this dream came true and the reserve area was named Hailey National Park,( Governor of United Province). In starting only timber cutting and hunting of deer was allowed inside the park but soon after the establishment of the park new rule came and killing and Capturing the animals and birds is prohibited in this area.

Asia's first National Park got renamed in 1955 as Ramganga National Park( lifeline Of Corbett Tiger Reserve) but in 1956 due to some reasons, it was named again Corbett National Park on the name of Sir Advert Jim Corbett who was a famous hunter, Naturalist and an author (man-eater of Corbett). As time passed the area of this Park was increased, the government concluded little areas in the park and after the second world war, the park was increased. In 1991 798 km2 area was included in the park as a buffer zone, this area includes the Sona Nadi and Kalagarh Forest division. Corbett Reserve area has the honor to be one of the 13th protected areas which are covered by the world wild fund under the terai Landscape program. The main aim of this program is to protect the terrestrial flagship species. Tiger, Asian Elephant, One-horned rhinoceros by restoring the corridors link to 13 protected areas.

With the main focus of saving wildlife, this park was opened in 1991 for tourists and you have to hire a guide with you when you go in the park. Corbett started giving training in 1993 and this course was given in 1995 as well and in this order guides get training in a workshop of Corbett National park. In 1991 when it was open for tourists so 45215 tourists went to the park on 3247 safaris during its season, this was the main reason to start ecotourism in Corbett National park, the government set a goal to keep tourism and save reserves as well. The Corbett administration has set up some rules which will be implemented during a safari in Corbett. Challenges For Jim Corbett National Park

Corbett has been suffering from many challenges since its inception as a past, present, and what can be in the future.

Past Challenges

Planning of establishing a National Park was in the 18th century but it took a long time, with the hard work of the British government it came into existence in1936 as the first national park of India. After independence, it was renamed As Ramganga national park, and in 1955 it was named Corbett national park, but shifting the people who were living in the near area and somewhere inside this was a big task and it was done in 1995 and made a new zone which was named Jhirna. In these lands 109 cases of poaching were recorded in 1988-89, this figure dropped to 12 reported cases in 1997-98. In 1985 David Hunt, who was a famous bird-watching tour guide, was attacked and killed by a tiger in the park. Some areas were vacant so planting was done by the Corbett tiger administration and made impossible tasks completed.

Present Challenges

The present is also a big challenge for Corbett as many shrubs which are not good for other trees are spreading like Lantana, Cassia, and all and the Corbett administration is working on this. Trafficking of woods, hunting the leopards and tigers for their skin, hunting the elephants for teeth are other big challenges by applying the hidden camera inside the jungle Corbett administration is trying to control it and in order to make it successful 500 hidden cameras are applied inside the jungle. Some villages which are near the core areas like Aamdanda and Dhela, the spots where the population is increasing, cut the trees. These types of cases are coming into a big amount, many times when a tiger or leopard hunt pet animals become a big reason for conflicts between offices and villagers. Agriculture lands are being ruined by elephants. In this case, farmers have to suffer from loss, and when people try for electric shock so many times animals like elephants die. In 2008 NCTA released a report and according to this"absence of ongoing monitoring protocol in a standardized manner, it would be impossible to forecast and keep track of untoward happenings in the area targeted by poachers. The traffic which is increasing day to day in Corbett and its different zones is affecting the wildlife a lot. This time the conflict between people and wildlife is increasing day by day and a lot of people have been killed by tigers and leopards.

Future

As tourism is increasing inside Corbett and the government is also working to offer mini-train safari inside the jungle, humans are going to the jungle in a big way so it can be disturbing for wildlife.
